TAPP: Kululeko's community safety programme

Safer streets, so the township economy can grow.

Crime keeps people indoors, closes businesses early and keeps investment away. The Community Safety Programme puts safety resources in place and makes sure residents know how to use them.

What the programme puts in place

In the air

Drones

Aerial awareness over defined areas, tasked to respond when an alert comes in.

On the street

Cameras and sensors

Fixed cameras and gunshot detection sensors at agreed locations.

With residents

Panic devices

Wearable devices that let a person call for help and share their location.

Behind it all

An operations centre

Every alert is reviewed by a person, and a response is coordinated with security, SAPS and emergency services.

With the community

Technology only works if people trust it

Sakhisizwe carries the programme into each community. Before anything is installed, it meets local leaders and residents, listens to their concerns and agrees where equipment goes. It then explains plainly what the drones and cameras do and do not do, how the panic device works, and what happens after an alert.

The programme is being rolled out area by area, starting in Kayamandi, Stellenbosch. Personal information is handled in line with our Privacy Policy.
